Well… the answer is YES! We are!! These are not teenage breakouts…
Adult acne vs. Teen acne
Contrary to popular belief, acne isn’t just for teenagers. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, skin type, gender or ethnicity. While teenagers typically get acne because of puberty hormones that trigger excess sebum production in the skin, adults get acne for a variety of reasons that range from stress, genetics, hormones, endocrine disorders, lifestyle, cosmetic use and our environment.
Adult acne is more often associated with inflammation, changes in pigmentation, and scarring, which cause the appearance of premature skin ageing. (Last thing we need!) These breakouts tend to occur along the jawline, mouth and chin, the sides of the neck and sometimes the chest too. Adults also often have sensitised skin and a combination of other skin conditions in addition to acne, which makes treatment more complex than treating acne in teen’s, who generally have more resilient, uniform oily skin with bigger, more congested pores.
Why us? Why me? Why you?
When I take off my make-up after work and see the fresh breakouts that day has bought, I often wonder… “Has this always been the case for women? Did women struggle with acne breakouts in the days of robin hood riding around Sherwood forest?! Or even as little as a few decades ago?” I wear high quality make-up, often skipping it on a day off, eat lots of fruit & veg, drink plenty of water, and I use the best skincare – religiously!! But the truth is, our modern pace of life has increased, causing constant daily pressures and discrepancies between our minds and our bodies. While our minds want to go faster and do more at once, our biochemistry has not changed much since the stone age. As a result, adults are living with more chronic stress, which can cause breakouts and visible signs of premature ageing.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (or PIH for short!)
This is a big one… the ‘scarring’ after a breakout… PIH is discolouration of the skin that follows an inflammatory wound and a common concern for adults with acne as it can create marks on the skin that remain for several weeks after a breakout has cleared. These marks range from pink to purple to black depending on your skin tone and can be worse in darker skin tones. Looking at these in the mirror is often just as stressful as seeing the breakouts themselves! But they are not truly scars and they can be treated to ensure they don’t become a permanent feature. Most PIH can be reduced over time with regular application of exfoliants and ensuring a high SPF is worn daily.
Stop stressing!! (easy peasy, right?!)
Women are twice as likely to suffer from severe stress and anxiety as men and its reported that 41% of women experience adult acne, with the number one trigger being – you guessed it – chronic stress. The continual release of stress hormones send our sebaceous glands into overdrive, creating more oil production, which, when mixed with dead skin and bacteria, clogs the follicles leading to the stressful breakouts! Even worse, these stress-related hormones also inflame the skin, causing redness and sensitivity. It’s sometimes hard to know which came first – the acne or the stress.
Enough doom and spotty gloom… all is not lost!
Thanks to the genius team at dermalogica, we have two of their new and very best breakout fighting products just waiting to make their way onto your problem areas! We had the pleasure of receiving some try-me products a few weeks ago and we were so excited to use them. These new formulas harness the best of nature and science to control breakouts and reduce the appearance of related skin ageing. These had my name written all over them!
I always struggle with breakouts but am continually trying to fight any signs of ageing. I found both products really easy to use, lightweight and I needed very little product. After a thorough double cleanse and exfoliate, I applied the clearing serum all over my face neck and chest, (all areas I regularly struggle with,) then the spot fader on my breakouts, followed by my regular moisturiser and off to bed I went! As usual, in the morning the first thing I did was look at my breakouts in the mirror. But that morning I did a double take! I couldn’t believe how much calmer the breakouts looked! Some of the smaller ones were pretty much gone!!! And after three weeks of using them I continue to see my breakouts calm and disappear much more quickly than usual. The clearing serum is making my skin look lovely and bright while really keeping the breakouts at bay and I find I’m needing the spot fader less due to fewer breakouts. Hooray!
AGE Bright Clearing Serum is a must for adults who regularly experience both breakouts and uneven skin tone. The two-in-one brightening and clearing serum clears and helps prevent breakouts while reducing visible skin ageing.
AGE Bright Spot Fader is ideal for adults who are concerned with active breakouts and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from breakouts and is something you can use at the first sign of a breakout, until the spot fades.
In the treatment room
Of course we have a fab selection of professional skin treatments to support your at-home regime and we just love being able to offer support, advice and some stress busting, well earned down-time. So get yourself booked in for soon but in the meantime, here are some top tips…
Don’t be scared of oils – An oil based cleanser like dermalogica precleanse acts like a magnet to the unwanted excess oils on our skin and in our make up, leaving skin feeling super clean and happy!
Exfoliate, resurface, buff! Getting rid of dead skin is the best thing you can do to prevent blocked pores.
Ditch the fabric softener – These heavily perfumed products can irritate skin and clog the pores.
Wash the day away! Our skin repairs while we sleep so NEVER go to bed without double cleansing and using a great serum, moisturiser and eye cream.
SPF – 365 days a year. No exceptions!
Hopefully this has cleared up a few questions and a few breakouts!
